Weldability and minimal warpage due to partial treatment
This Eltropuls process provides the option of having components protected against wear at the exact point where the protective layer is required. To this end, the nitride layer is exclusively applied to the stressed point. Non-stressed points, weld areas or compression areas are masked and not treated. Further reasons for a partial treatment could be a desire for the maximum dimensional stability and form retention, mechanical or magnetic properties, as well as a process chain in which chip removal is planned after hardening.
You are probably thinking that has to be ridiculously expensive. Well, you’d be wrong! In many cases, the costs for a partial treatment are only marginally more expensive than for full treatment. The benefits of partial treatment are enormous and often mean considerable savings. For example, entire process steps, like hard machining, can be omitted.
